Even a Busy Person Can Listen - 3 Powerful Tips

When was the last time someone really listened to you without getting paid to do it? I am often reminded of the need to take time to listen when I recall how I felt when a friend or my hubby (who is also a friend) took the time to really hear what I was saying-or not saying.

A friend called me recently to give me an update on some information. I was busy working on the computer but answered the phone anyway. As she shared I heard uncomfortable pauses in her voice. I asked her, "Are you okay?" She responded with saying "Yes, I am ok." I stopped typing and said, "Your voice does not sound like you are okay."

Then she shared what was really going on with her at that time. Now, I am not a therapist, and none of us have to be a trained counselor to listen between the lines when someone speaks. Here are three simple tips to get you started. And off course if you know someone is in serious trouble please try to get them the help they need.

1. Does the person sound sad or unhappy?

Sometimes the person is saying all the right words but the tone of voice is sad or unhappy. Yet, many folks just hear the words "I'm ok, without hearing or ignoring the sadness in the voice.

2. Listen for long pauses between words.

Long pauses occur for so many reasons. Yet, sometimes folks are quietly sobbing or gathering their composure.

3. Listen for the lack of energy in the voice

Sometimes a person may be feeling physically weak and it is reflected in their voice.

I encourage all of us to take the time to listen to each other. Remember, one day someone may need to listen to you.
